- WHO WE ARE
What is Fotini Kipseli? When and where was it founded? Fotini Kipseli is a group of people from Kipseli that want to help make Kipseli, once again, what it used to be: one of the most desirable Athenian neighborhoods. Its purpose is to illuminate the entrances of apartment blocks, shop windows, and poorly lit spots, to reinstate some of the glory their neighborhood once had. Its target is to brighten this historic neighborhood and, through various lighting projects, improve the quality of life for its residents.
Why did it begin? What was your inspiration? The idea behind it is that simple changes can give back big returns in people’s everyday quality of life, much more than we often realize.
Why is light important? How does it change the quality of life of residents? It is surprising how many people – all over the world - do not pay attention to the quality of light. It is often assumed that light in an entrance or a hallway is just to serve only a very basic function – to see where you step! But there is more than this. Better lighting in front of the houses has been shown to correlate with more safety, and an enhanced quality of life. Better quality lighting – ie appropriate intensity, lamp size, directionality and color temperature- can clearly improve the aesthetics and the overall wellbeing effect of any space, open or closed. We want to show to people that LED technology allows us to have excellent quality light and can be used with any light fitting, old or new, offering more economy than any lamp type previously available.
What does Fotini Kipseli strive for in the future? We strive to convince people about the value of adequate, good quality lighting in the entrances of their houses/apartment buildings/shops. We also aspire to expand our activities to other, semi-public or public spaces. There are, for instance, many arcades in Athens that could benefit from revamped lighting – and only a handful have been taken care of/renovated for the moment. There are also countless semi-covered arcades (on the ground floor of the buildings, as an extension of the pavement under the first floor) which are almost never lit. They are considered “private” spaces, so they have no municipal lighting– but are in fact part of the pavement, and installing good quality lighting along them would greatly enhance the aesthetics and safety of the whole city. As they are private, the people who live in the buildings above them are the only ones who can do it.
